The houses that were built long ago were not the same as the houses that were built nowadays. Before building the houses they would put up four piles of stones, one in each corner of the field. If these stones were knocked in the morning the house would not be built, but it would be built in another place.
Long ago the houses were built with "dast buide" and they weren't roofed with heather first and then straw. This kept the houses warm. In some of the houses there was a chimney made of boards nailed together, but in others the chimneys were made with elder rods and "dast buide" and plastered on the outside. In most of the houses there was one door and also a half door but in the thatched houses there were two doors. They were made straw mats and put them up against the door in order to keep out the cold.
