Beside the Monastery at the Quay there was a boiler set up, in which
brachan was cooked and this was a welcome diet. During the famine years the Brothers had a most difficult time but the West stood up against the ravages of the famine better than the inland districts. Fish could be obtained in great numbers at the time and Indian meal could be brought by sea to Clifden.
All the fine places around Clifden were in the hands of the Protestants and when the places became vacant as a result of the famine the Protestants took them(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
