In 1897 a great wind swept over the west of Ireland. In many districts roofs were blown off houses. Patrick Furey a native of Cloonfaughna had his potatoes stored on the loft of a barn. During the storm people were coming from a dance and were hit by some potatoes because the roof was blown off the barn. In that same year the river Suck overflowed its banks and carried off a lot of hay.
