- Long ago they used to go and pull long rushes and they would peel the skin off them. Then they used to melt a piece f dripping and they would dip the rushes in it. Every rush used to last a half an hour. They used to get dale also and they used to split it up in thin slices. Then they used to put it up on the chimney to season for a couple of nights. It was said that the dale was able to show the best light and was able to last longer. These lights were out about seventy years ago. The old people used to be card-playing on griddles beside the fire. There were no tables at that time. There were no chairs. It was stones they used to sit on at that time. They used to have beds made of timber and there was a roof of boards over them. The houses used to be very low and the roof used to be very flat.
