- In older times, it was customary to keep a corpse in a house for at least two nights.
All the friends and relatives of the deceased used cry and lament. A member of the family always sat at the bed-side to show respect for the dead and to cry with the sympathisers. This was called "keening".
A wake was held at night. Each individual who came to the wake was supplied with a pipe tobacco and snuff. The neighbouring boys and girls played all sorts of games. They used to play a game called slapping and another called "spoil the market" and also a game called "Hort" and another called cor a stóilín. Before going to the wake all young men took salt in their pockets for fear a bad eye would be made of them and they would never go or return home alone.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
