- The schools that were going before the national schools were called ''Hedge schools''. There was one in Lissannanny, some of the teachers were from the district around. Most of them were strangers. The subjects taught were Irish and English, arithmetic, geography and Latin. They spoke Irish in school. Some subjects were taught through Irish. Some teachers had respect for Irish. In some of the schools the scholars had books different to books nowadays. They had slates to write on. They sat on the grass around the master.
