Tá leagan nua den tras-scríbhinn seo ag fanacht le ceadú. - The schools that were going before the national schools were called ''Hedge schools''. There was one in Lissannanny, some of the teachers were from the district around. Most of them were strangers. School was carried on in farmers houses long ago. The teachers stayed with each farmers' children for a few days or a week. They got so much money for each child. The subjects taught were Irish and English, arithmetic, geography and Latin. They spoke Irish in school. Some subjects were taught through Irish. Some teachers had respect for Irish. In some of the schools the scholars had books different to books nowadays. They had slates to write on. They sat on the grass around the master. One of the first national schools was build in Castle-grove Kilconly.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
