- The old people of this district cannot bring to memory the names or stories about any of the old poets of long ago. One or two adults of the present generation seem to be able to compose little songs and poems. One old man named Frank Collins of Weirs, Kilbannon, is able to compose. He is 83 of age but is still hale and hearty. He gets his poems published in the "Tuam Herald" - the local paper. One of the poems is entitled the Beet Fly. These are a few lines of it:-
"Says Patcheen to Séainín,
I'm ready to cry.
For my beet is destroyed with that terrible fly,
It acted very early in the bright month of May,
And ate it completely right down to the clay."
