Famine TimesIn dark 1848 as it is known here in Ireland, hardship and misery were the lot of the people, hunger and sickness, that was known as the famine fever. Crops did not grow, no foreign food could be got and no money was available to buy the food. Although across the channel in England there was an over-supply, yet the Irish were let die.Nettles that grew in burying ground were eaten. It was a common sight in those days to see people dying by the roadside with a handful of nettles in their hands, and the trace of them around their mouths.
