1. If a black coal falls up in the hearth, there is a man coming to the house. If a red coal falls up it is a woman that will come in.
2. It was an old custom with the people long ago not to rake the fire if there was anyone if there was anyone of the family out. The last person that goes to bed is the one that rakes the fire.
