1. Funeral Customs

   There are many habits and customs attached to wakes and funerals. Some of them are handed down to us from the penal times.
   When a person dies and when a person goes to the wake he first goes to the wake-room and says some prayers for the repose of the soul of the deceased person. He then sprinkles holy water on the corpse. The person then sits in the room and either talks to the relatives of the dead person or to (?) other people that may be in the room. The person then goes to the kitchen or some other room and partakes of some thing they may be invited to take. The corpse is left in the room for one night and on the evening of the next day it is taken to the chapel and rested there for another night. The hour for the burial is arranged and is carried out on the next day.
   The next day the corpse is carried to the graveyard. The graveyard of Killossory which is the local graveyard here is situated at a cross roads. In the middle of the cross roads there is a patch of green grass. The coffin is carried around the plot of grass three times
