    Cromwell
Local people tell the following stories about Cromwell.
When Cromwell was travelling through this part of the country with his army, he visited Gormanstown Castle at the gate he was met by Lord Gormanstown, and Cromwell said to him "whose castle is this" and Lord Gormanstown replied "it was mine yesterday but it is yours to-day" Cromwell was so well pleased with the answer that the said "It was yours yesterday and it is yours today."
Another story told by the people of this locality is that when Cromwell was in this part of the country he sent a letter to England for a cargo of brogues, but those in England misunderstood the word brogues and they sent a cargo of rogues. The people of (these) Balbriggan say that the Skerries people are descendants of these rogues, and the Skerries people say that the Balbriggan people are the real descendants of them.
