At the bottom of the hill called Farrell's hill, where Tom Staunton's house is now built stood on old castle called Bawn Castle. This castle belonged to a family called the Mac Philbins and were a powerful clann in this district from the ninth to the twelvth century. They had another castle at Aiso fobair called Doon Castle. Bawn Castle was also called Mac Philbin's Castle, but you never hear it called anything now but Bawn Castle.
When O Ruaire prince of Brefni lived he came on a pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick and he waited the night in Bawn Castle. Here he spent the night with the prince of Bawn Castle. They intended to make the pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick on the following day but during the evening O Ruaire had an argument with Mc Philbin about Deverogilla O Ruaire's wife. Mc Philbin insulted O Ruaire's wife. Anyway they had a(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
