- We have got a churn at home and it is four feet in height. It is wide at the bottom and wide at the top and narrow in the center. There are five hoops on the churn and a lid.
When my mother is churning this is what she does.
She scolds the churn first and then rinses it with cold water. She then pours the thick milk into the churn and begins to churn.
When the milk is "broken" she knows the churning is almost finished but she does not stop. She churns until she sees the butter floating on top of the milk.
She then lifts the butter into a basin or wooden dish which she keeps for the purpose. She then gets two wooden butter spades and "claps" it with these. After that she puts it into a basin of cold water and washes it. She then brings the hairs from it with a knife by winning it up and down through it and I after that she washes it and salts it and makes it into prints or little rolls.
