  1. In olden times thatched houses were common with earthen floors which were made of blue-clay.
    The walls were built with blue-clay instead of lime and stones.
    The houses were not slated but were all thatched with oat or rye straw and sometimes with flax
    The latter was more durable.
    They sowed corn and thrashed it with flails and then they thatched their houses with the drawn straw.
    In olden times people used to put a bed in the kitchen and some old people in country places have got them still in what is called the out-shot of the kitchen.
    The fire was placed in the gable end of the house. The chimney was made of clay and wattles.
