His works breathe of the beauties and scenes of nature and the wide open spaces. When he wrote his poem describing the Grand Canyon of the Colorado, he dismounted at the rim of the Canyon and standing with his sombrero in his hand was so overcome as he gazed at God's masterpiece that he lost control of himself and shouted out the first lines:
O Canyon, grand and wild and free!
You've got a lariat on me.
I am proud to honour this unique and colourful character and distinguished son of Inishowen and feel that his works deserve and should be accorded a place of literature.
From his many Irish poems I have selected "In Donegal" for you here because of it's human appeal, as the thought of one's childhood or first sweetheart always linger in the memory.
