- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)throughout the country, had my ancestor spin and weave it into blankets, and invented one of the first foot-power mills for thickening them. This mill was made of strong timber where two men sat facing each other, pound, foot about, a pair of blankets with bare legs and feet, and would for two hours until they acquired the proper thickness. The owner of the mill would go around the neighbouring homes with two buckets on a hoop, and collect the contents of slop jars which was regularly saved for him and poured it hot on the blankets while his men did the foot paddling. By this crude process blankets could be made as thick as desired, and when laundered and stretched were very durable and serviceable, a good pair lasting a lifetime with care. When his business increased he designed and built on of the first waterpower mills for this purpose.
A cotter and his family, who lived near my grandmother's girlhood home, almost died of hunger during the potato famine of 1845-46. When their health had been greatly undermined (feeding on turnips cabbage, dulse, wild berries and grass, with an occasional piece of bread) he resolved to provide his wife and six crying. hungry children with a decent meal, so he came to my great-grandfather and asked permission _ which was readily granted -(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
