1. Story

   Long ago there there lived a blacksmith by the name of John Mooney. One day a stranger came into the forge with he wanted "bored", as John worked he chatted and when the piece of iron was finished the Devil as that was who the stranger was made John promise that he would go with him at the end of three years, but that he would have three wishes in return. One, that nobody but himself should enter his house, two, that no other smith should redden a bar but himself; three; that every sixpence put into his purse should stay in.
   His first wish was granted and no-one but himself entered his house. The second turned to be the opposite, as from the day he met the stranger he never could redden a bar. His third wish was granted as, every sixpence he put in his purse could not be taken out even by John himself. When the two years were up John died. He went first to heaven, but Saint Peter met him at the gate and told him to go down a step to Purgatory where he would get cheaper lodgings. When he arrived in Purgatory he was told to got a step lower. John went down to Hell, where the Devil met him, and lifting his poker
