In some places the last night of the Old Year is called "Wee Christmas Night" and is supposed to commemorate the changing of the water into wine at the marriage feast of Cana. The story is told that a man remained up on this night to make the most of the opportunity and to enjoy the cheap drink and he was found dead beside the well in the morning.
- It is the custom on New Year's day not to throw out any water or ashes or to give anything away, for it is said that if anything is thrown out on that day the New Year's luck is thrown out. All the potatoes are washed and most of the necessary work is done on the Eve of the Feast so that no water will have to be thrown out on the following day.
