- Long ago shops were not so common as they are now adays. In olden times people always went to the nearest town to make purchases and seldom bought anything in the shops.
Many hundreds of years ago money was not so plentiful in this place as it is now adays. In those times when a man wanted to buy a cow he would make a bargain to give two sheep or two pigs in exchange for the cow. This was also done when buying potatoes and the buyer would give turf or turnips in exchange.
After this when money became more common the people did not exchange goods. When a person went to a shop to buy and had had got not money, but promised to pay when they got the money this was called "tick".
