- If one takes a coal out of a house, you are supposed to have bad luck if you do not put a few turf on the fire. Another one is - if one gets salt it is unlucky to give it back, and hardly any one borrows salt. It is unlucky to clean out the cow's byre on a Friday, and people never do so. It is unlucky to see a red-haired woman on the road, and people do not like to meet any one when going on a journey. It is unlucky to break a mirror and any one that does so is supposed to have bad luck for seven years.
