  1. About fifty years ago there lived in the townland of Castlegay a man called Thomas Black. He was a farm labourer and he was a very strong man. He was also the first in the district who was able to mow corn with a scythe, as previously there was nothing but hooks with which to cut the corn. And now when this new tool called a “scythe” came into use, Black was able to cut the harvest for twenty farmers round the district. He was able to mow two Irish acres every day he went out.
Black lived to be ninety years of age and his food consisted chiefly of oat bread and strong tea, and from the early age of sixteen he smoked an ounce of tobacco every day.
