- Lord Leitrim was a very cruel landlord who lived in a Castle along the Mulroy. He owned large estates in Galway, Leithrim and Donegal. He was notorious for his tyranny Cruelty and oppression to his unfortunate tenants. The castle where he lived is still to be seen in Carrigart and his estate in Donegal is now under his nephew Lord Leitrim. The murder of this Cruel Landlord was the biggest sensation that ever occurred around Mulroy Bay. It happened on the 2nd of April 1878. A few days previous to this date he had threatened to evict several families in Fanad on the other side of Mulroy Bay. Fortunately he never lived to carry out this threat but the example of his other evictions around Carrigart and Fanad was proof to his tenants that he had every intention of carrying out his threats. On this April morning he was on his way to Leithrim on business. He quite well understood his unpopularity and consequently never travelled without an escort. On this particular morning he also had an escort.
