- There is a field in Ballysaggart called "The Field of the Black Ash" because long ago there was a huge tree growing in the middle of the field and it was a big Ash Tree. When the person the owned that tree went to cut it down he could not do so. It took ten men to fell it. When falling it split in two and instead of the timber being white like that of ordinary trees it was black. When the owner tried to burn some of it he could not and had to leave it unburnt. Some of the timber can be seen yet.
