- Paddy Carey, Gurane, Killorglin, Co. Kerry, was the chief basket-weaver in my native place. As the place was marshy, the twigs grew plentifully, and after being seasoned were twisted in and out, and made into baskets.
My Grandmother was a beautiful spinner. She used to keep all the grey wool off the sheep, have it carded and then spin it. It was then taken to the weaver who wove it into beautiful, warm flannels.
Soap was made long ago by rendering fat and when it was brought to boiling point a special mixture was added. The fat was then cooled and cut into slices. It was used for washing only.
