- In the month of August in the year 1920 as my father was passing through the village of Ashbourne, one night on the north side he was accosted by four men who asked for a match. He produced a box of matches and gave it to them. He saw the men enter the old R.I.C. Barrack which was vacant. Those men had with them two tins of petrol. They sprinkled all the wooden part of the building with the content of one tin. They left the other full tin on the staircase with the top open. Then they set fire to the building and when the heat reached the petrol there was a terrific explosion. The roof was blown off the building and the flames could be seen for miles around.
