If a neighbour came in to his friends house for a coal, the household would not give them one. They believe that it brings bad luck to the house and that the person who is getting the coal can steal the butter.To prevent the fairies from stealing the butter, I was told that a certain man was supposed to go about from house to house with a donkey's shoe. When the household would be churning this man would put the shoe in the fire, then he would take it out and put it under the churn. They thought that this practice prevented the (butter) fairies from stealing the butter.(continues on next page)
