- The principal feasts with which there are any customs connected in this district are Christmas, St. Bridget’s Eve, Easter Sunday, Palm Sunday. Before Christmas boys gathered up in bands and go about from house to house “mummering.” Some play music, other[s] dance, and others sing songs. On Christmas night Santa Claus visits the houses and puts presents in the children’s stockings. On St. Bridget’s Eve people make crosses and hang them up in the house to keep away diseases. On St. Patrick’s Day people wear shamrocks in their coats and hats. On May Day children gather May flowers and throw them about the doors and windows. On Bonfire Night people put out a fire on a hill. Some people go from one fire to another with a torch in their hand. On Hallows Eve Night there is a feast of apples for the children. On Easter Sunday people always have a feast of eggs. On Palm Sunday people take Palm to the Chapel to get it blessed.
