- In olden times the people used rush candles to give them light at night before oil lamps were used. These were made in the following manner, Four or five stalks of rushes were got and the outer green skin peeled off them. Then these were dipped in boiled goose lard and twisted tightly together. They were then ready for burning. A large potato or turnip was got and a small hole made in it into which the candle was stuck.
