  1. There was a man one time who lived between Laghey and Pettigo. He was a soldier in the Crimea War and he was wounded and he had a large pension which was paid every quarter. He died the day before the pension was due and his wife determined to draw that quarter’s pension. She called in a neighbouring [sic] man and took him into her confidence. He bolstered the dead man up in the bed, and put a clay pipe in his mouth. Then this man went to the office in Donegal to draw the pension. The man in the office asked him if he had seen the pensioner that day as he was coming to Donegal, and he said he saw him with a pipe in his mouth. The man got the pension and he brought it home to the pensioner’s wife.
Having secured the pension they let the neighbours know he was dead and they buried him very respectfully. The man was Patrick Mc Cormack.
