  1. The people of Ballyshannon had bitter experience of the rigour of the Penal days, like the rest of the Irish people when persecution stalked our fair Island.
    At Bachelors Walk, Ballyshannon there stands a large rock, barren of grass, known as "The Hangmans Rock". It has been so-called because priests were said to be hanged there during the Penal Times.
    There are other places in the district associated with the Penal days. On the north bank of the little river near Abbey Assaroe is a spot called Carraig Aifrinn or Catsby, where Mass was celebrated when there was no church or monastery in the district.
    After the demolition of the Abbey Assaroe Monastery and when a price was placed upon a Priests head by the English Government, this secluded spot was used by the hunted Priests to offer up the Holy Sacrifice of
