  1. The most likely time that marriages take place in my locality is before lent or on Shrove Tuesday. In olden times the marriages took place in the evening or at night in the home for the bride’s parents.
    The old people were very superstitious in regard to the day on which the wedding takes place. The following is a well-known local rhyme which denotes the lucky and unlucky days—
    “Monday for wealth
    Tuesday for health
    Wednesday is the best day of all;
    Thursday for crosses
    Friday for losses
    Saturday has no luck at all:
    Matches are generally made by parents for both bride and bridegroom.
    When they are selected, the parents of the bride give a dowry to the future husband. Sometimes goods or stock are given with the money.
