- 1. To make a rush-candle the people first gathered long rushes and seasoned them. A cám was procured and the rush was pealed. The cám was filled with melted butter of or fat and the rush was drawn through it time after time until a candle was formed.2 The home made oil lamps consisted of a bottle, oil, and a bit of thick clean cotton. The bottle was filled with oil and a hole was made in the cork through which the cotton was put. Then the cotton was lit.
