- Long ago the travelling folk were welcomed by nearly all. When a shuler would call at a house he or she used be brought in and fed and given clothes. Sometimes they might stay for a couple of weeks. Those who were not welcomed were driven from the house with the “Beggars Bóltón”. This was a stick that used to be kept in the corner by nearly every house owner for driving away persisting tramps.
