  2. This is one of the customs which is always carried out on Christmas Eve. Any person who likes to go out to a stable, before midnight on the same night may find that the story is true, for my uncle went out to the stable a few minutes before the time, about twenty years ago, to test for himself the truth of the story that the donkey knelt down as soon as the clock strikes twelve. But true enough the ass first stood up and then went down on his two front knees uttering a sound, which was surely "Alleluia", he told this to many people and it was told to their friends and no body tried it. About six months after this, he died, and when his remains were being removed from the house, the same donkey was near and he knelt down and died; so the ass did not live long after his master.
