- Long ago in Ireland before the invention of toy factories, boys and girls had to make their own toys. Amongst the toys they made were tops, catapults, balls, bird traps, hurls and kites.
They made a top from an old thread spool by cutting one end of it to a point. Then they would get a nail or spike and hammer it through the hole in the centre of the spool. This would be a perfect top and they would have plenty of fun spinning it.
They spin the top by rolling a lace round it and by catching hold of the lace they threw the top on the ground. It would spin for about five minutes.
