- Old Crafts
Long ago every town had its own trades. Swords had many. One of these and a very skilful trade was the making of shars for ploughs. Mr Kelly was the smith. He would buy steel and melt it. Then he would get yellow clay and make the shape of the shar in the clay. When he would have this done he would put the mould into it. When the mould harden he would separate the yellow clay from it and the shar would be made. He was always kept very busy making these because he was the only many in Co dublin that could make them and the farmer always neede them to plough the land.
When machinery started this old craft was done away with because machines made them quicker.
