- The district that I live in was very thickly populated before the Famine. The famine was caused by the potato crop failing. It was (caused) a disease called blight. First the leaves withered then the potatoes rotted in the ground. The only food they had was indian meal, although they had good crops they had to send them all to England and other countries in order to pay the rents. One of the ways the English goverment helped was by letting the Irish go to America in ships, these ships were called coffin ships because of the number of people that died on the way over to America. Nearly half of the pouplation died and many emigrated. There was never any other period of famine due to the failure of the potato crop known in History.
