  1. In early times, before the sewing machine was invented, clothes were made by hand by the woman of the house as tailors were too expensive and could only be employed by the wealthy. Then came the journey man tailor. The farmers wove their own cloth and the tailors went from house to house having no shop. When the sewing machine was invented by Elias Howes in 1540, the tailoring was carried out in shops ad machine woven goods replaced the hand woven cloth.
    With the improvement in machinery tailoring became concentrated in factories and tailors became fewer and fewer. There is only one tailor in Balbriggan and he gets very little work to do. His work consists chiefly in mending clothes and in turning old suits. The people of Balbriggan prefer to buy ready made clothes.
