- Long ago the times were very bad. My father told me that he was looting a house in Coolbagh and all was in the yard was cockle-shells. They used to boil them and they used to eat what used to be in them. There were men working up in Coolbagh Quay for four-pence a day. Some of the people long ago were dying for the want of food. They used to have potatoes for their breakfast. The people long ago were not able to give any help to each other for each only trying to live for himself.
