- Long ago people used to make their own bread out of crushed white oats called oaten meal cakes. They used also make griddle cakes out of Indian meal, barley meal and flour wet with milk. The griddle was made of wires held up by a brand. The oaten-meal cakes were made in ovens in the walls. There used to be a fire under them. The old people used find it very hard to eat them because they were very hard. It is said that they used to be very often burned. People bake their bread in bastables now-a-days and they put a cross in the high part of the cake in order that it would take the heat better and bake evenly.
