  1. Long ago there lived a Queen who was a cruel stepmother and very hard on her little stepson, Conn. She sent him out every morning to mind the cattle in the fields and gave him one little slice of bread only for the whole day and no supper at night. Indeed she hoped she would die soon so that her three daughters would get all the property of the King, their father. But instead of getting thin and fading away, Conn began to get fat and to grow very big and this made the witch very angry. She sent her youngest daughter out with Conn to watch the cattle, but really to see where he got his dinner.
Off went Conn and his stepsister, but when the dinner hour came he played a sweet tune on his whistle and lulled the little girl asleep. After a couple of hours she woke up, but during the rest of the day she saw nothing out of the common and so had nothing to tell her mother when she went home.
