  2. On a huge rock rising from the Blackwater are the ruins of Strancally Castle. It is about four miles from Youghal. The Lords of Desmond were the owners and many a fine battle was fought there. The massive rock foundation has a hewn passage communicating with the river.
    It is called the "Murdering Hole". Before its destruction in 1579 Strancally was a storehouse for piles of loot, stolen in Youghal by the Earl of Desmond and his followers. On the Christmas of that year, the Desmond soldiers sacked the town
