  1. About three hundred years ago there lived a man named Sam Joker. He had a house and four acres of land where "Scar-rook" Wood now is, on the south side of Lismore. The land was bad and Sam was very poor, but he used to work for farmers.
    At one time he worked for a farmer near Cappagh. This farmer was a great miser and Sam used to sleep in the settle in the kitchen. One day a neighbour told Sam that a bag of gold was hidden under the flag at the fireplace in the kitchen. So next night, about twelve o'clock, Sam crept from his bed and going to the fireplace, took up the flag and stole the bag of gold. He ran for home as quickly as he could. When he arrived at home he buried the gold under an oak tree in his field where the fairies lios is now. A month after Sam came for his gold and
