  1. Lismore.

A town of saints and scholars.
Lismore, on the banks of the beautiful Blackwater, dates its origin back to the sixth century when, it is said, an Abbey was founded here. It is certain at all events that St. Carthage took up his abode here in 631 to conduct a Monastery which became so famous as a University that hundreds of students flocked to it from all parts of Europe.
It reached the zenith of its fame under St. Colman at the close of the eighteenth century.
In these times no fewer than twenty Churches were founded within the Monastic city of Lismore.
The place was several times devastated by the Danes and several times also destroyed by fire, from the tenth to the twelfth century.
