The cow house is a long stone structure with three arched doorways. The inside has a cement floor and the roof is of a galvanised iron.
The bales are made of timber and are fixed into the walls of the cow shed and there is one bale for each cow, so that the cow's head is fixed into this while the cow is being milked.
The bale is closed by a little catch and the milker opens this to leave out the cow when she has been milked.
Sometimes the cows are tied by a chain around the neck, this chain is then fastened to a timber post.
Bells are sometimes hung on the cow's necks. The ringing soothes the cows and they yield their milk more freely and more plentifully.
The older people used to sing a kind of soothing song when milking. This soothed the cow and it is often used still with cross cows. This singing keeps the cows very quiet.
