  1. In my district marriages take place frequently during Shrove. Shrove begins the week immediately after Christmas and ends on Shrove Tuesday - the Tuesday previous to Ash Wednesday. Long ago the priest would sleep in the house after the marriage. Hardly any marriage would pass by without a faction fight with blackthorn sticks. It is entirely different now. People having been married one month have the hauling home! The bride and the bridegroom go to the bride's house.
