  1. The Local Patron Saint
St Tiernan, the patron saint of Crossmolina was born in Errew in the sixth century. He was the grandson or the great-grandson of King Awley. The monastery built by him in Errew is now in ruins. It was destroyed by some Cromwellian settlers. These also put an end to monasticism in Errew by putting the few monks who remained to death. It is said that these monks met their death after this fashion. The planters harnessed to them to wild horses which literally tore them in pieces. Each of these planters met with a violent death.
The present parish church of Crossmolina is dedicated to St Tiernan. The holy well at Errew is dedicated to him. The saint himself is buried in the Abbey at Errew.
