- In the year 1846 there was a great famine in Ireland. The potatoe crop failed and the blight fell on the land and so the people were starved of hunger. The English had food in abundence in their country and instead of sending some to Ireland they placed old rotten ships at the harbours to take the people away to foreign countries. Some and most of the ships never reached America, they went to the bottom of the sea. The English people were only glad to see the Irish people going out of the country to foreign(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
