- Charles Bianconi an Italian came to Ireland when he was a young boy and landed in Dublin. All he possessed was six small statues for sale and four pence in his pocket. He sold the statues at a small profit and bought more and carried on in this way for some months. He lived on a bun and a glass of beer in the day and this was his only food. He paid three pence per night for his bed in a model lodge. He then started through the country. When he had a few pounds saved he wandered in to Galway and hawked statues in a basket. He was walking one day to the fair of Ballinasloe when a shaft car with driver and three passengers drew up with him.
