   of the O'Connors died there and was buried at the foot of the hill. His brother fought with the chieftain of Connaught and was defeated. The chieftain then took possession of the castle.

2. Local History - Ardnaree Workhouse

   

   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   Long ago there was a workhouse in Ardnaree. It was built in the Croquet field. It fell into disuse the time of the Famine. There was a large number of people brought there the time of the Famine. There was also a large number of people buried round it. The old workhouse that is now knocked down on the Crossmolina Road was at that time a military barrack and when the soldiers left the town it was changed into a workhouse.
